In the brief window between snowmelt and snowfall, pikas race to prepare — and sometimes, they run with flowers. The noise of high pitched “EEPs!” fills the subalpine in Rocky Mountain National Park. One pika does not squeal because bright yellow blooms are clenched tight in its mouth as it dashes through the tundra. One of my favorite encounters of the season.
